Ways Christ UMC serves our community

If you have any questions regarding these ministries, contact Carol Yarian (carol@christumchurch.org)
College Care

As our high school students graduate, we strive for Christ UMC to maintain a connection with them.  Care packages, filled with goodies and words of encouragement are sent out once a semester, at finals time, to these students.  Care Packages are also sent to those in the military, as we support those serving our country.  Volunteers are needed to update student addresses, collect items to send, and packing the boxes. A student or military person receiving a package from our church realizes we care and that they are still a very important part of Christ UMC.

Edgelea Backpack Ministry

Edgelea Feed the Kids program provides food for students in need each weekend during the school year by packing, picking up and delivering backpacks. The staff at Edgelea Elementary recommends families for this program and we fulfill their needs. Funding for this program is provided by the generosity of our congregation and through monthly food donations. Volunteers are needed each week throughout the school year to pack or deliver the bags to Edgelea Elementary School. This ministry also helps to bring awareness to our congregation the needs many families in our community face. Many times it is our next door neighbor.

Feed The People

Each Saturday a team of volunteers prepare and deliver lunches: a sandwich, chips, and a cookie or fruit to Lafayette Transitional Housing (LTHC) to feed those facing homelessness. We have 5 volunteers prepare 15 lunches each week so that we can feed 75 people.

Food Pantry

The Food Pantry serves clients who need a bag of groceries to help see them through the month. Volunteers are needed on 2 days, 5 times yearly, usually the second week of the month in January, March, April, June, and October. Volunteers fill a grocery bag or bags according to the size of the family.

Jubilee Christmas

We provide 20 families with Christmas assistance in the form of clothing, food boxes, cleaning baskets, new toys, blankets, ornaments, Bibles, cookie trays and many other items. The families are provided to us through Lafayette Urban Ministry (LUM). There are many ways to volunteer from shopping, working at church, organizing items, baking cookies, hosting a family to wrapping gifts. Jubilee takes place in December at our church and planning starts months earlier. Volunteering can be one hour or it can be giving of many hours of your time and talents. The reward of seeing these families have a Christmas that would not otherwise happen is truly a blessing for all.

Kids Kloset

The Kids Kloset provides free clothing to anyone in the community. Volunteers are needed to sort and hang clothing when donations are brought in. We also need volunteers to be available to assist people on Tuesdays from 12:30pm – 3:00 pm when the Kids Kloset is open. You can make a difference in a child’s life.

Turkey Time

Many families are unable to celebrate a traditional Thanksgiving dinner. Join us as we provide a full Thanksgiving dinner for those struggling in our own Christ UMC family and in our community.

Senior Food Insecurity Program

Christ United Methodist is partnering with Food Finders to help seniors in our community receive monthly boxes of food delivered to their apartments at 5 Senior Housing Communities in Lafayette: Fairington Apartments, Fowler Apartments, Historic Jeff Center, Friendship House, and the Tippecanoe Senior Center. Twice a month each center will receive 50 boxes of food delivered. Christ UMC will be packing the boxes of food to be delivered the 3rd Thursday of each month from 5-7 pm at Food Finders, Fresh Market location, and need volunteers each month to help.  Join us as we work together to love and care for our neighbors!
